Most people who oil their hair pour, smear and wait. The tradition asks for more, because the massage is not a way of applying the oil. It is the treatment itself, and the oil is its vehicle. Ten minutes of proper technique with Bhringraj Hair Oil does more than an hour of oil sitting passively on an untouched scalp.
Work in sections
A scalp cannot be massaged all at once. Part the hair down the middle, apply a little warm oil along the parting with a fingertip or a small spout, and massage that strip before moving on. Make a new parting a few centimetres over, and repeat until the whole scalp has been covered. Sectioning is what separates a real oiling from a cosmetic one: every part of the scalp gets both the oil and the hands.
Pressure and movement
Use the pads of the fingers, never the nails. The right pressure moves the scalp over the skull rather than the fingers over the skin; if you feel the scalp gliding, you are working at the correct depth. Slow circles are the classical movement, with the occasional gentle press and release at the crown and temples. The scalp is rich in marma points (vital points of traditional Ayurvedic massage), the same map worked in a full head treatment, and slowness is what lets the massage find them.
Timing
Ten to fifteen minutes of massage, then at least half an hour of rest before washing, or overnight for the traditional full measure. Once or twice a week is the classical rhythm. More often is not better; the scalp benefits from the cycle of oiling and cleansing, not from permanent saturation.
What to avoid
Cold oil, which sits on the surface and does nothing. Rough speed, which tangles the lengths and irritates the skin. And oiling dirty hair repeatedly without washing between sessions. The ritual is a cycle: oil, rest, wash. Kept weekly, it becomes the quiet foundation of everything else in classical Ayurvedic hair care. Those who like tools can begin each session by waking the scalp with a Kansa scalp massager before the oil goes on.
